Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a very common disorder of the foot that millions of Americans suffer from each year. If you are experiencing pain on the bottom of your foot that is often worse in the mornings- this could be plantar fasciitis. This ailment occurs due to an inflammation and irritation of the fascia (connective tissue) on the bottom of the foot. With each step this tissue gets tensioned and overtime can start to develop microtears. Many circumstances can lead to plantar fasciitis such as overuse, irregular arches/lack of proper arch support, excessive tension in the muscles of the lower leg or a lack of ankle mobility.

Treatment of plantar fasciitis includes an evaluation and determination of the underlying cause of the issue. Once that is fully understood, the Chiropractors at Kailua Wellness Center will create a treatment plan that involves manual therapy to the fascia to start the healing process. Chiropractic adjustments to the joints of the ankle and foot may also be utilized to increase mobility and thereby decrease strain on the soft tissue. Releasing tension and tightness of the musculature surrounding the fascia is also necessary to expedite the healing process.

The Chiropractors may recommend a modification of your activity or the usage of orthotics to help support your arch better. Lastly, strengthening of the foot-support musculature will be essential to make sure you are not prone to an exacerbation of plantar fasciitis as you return to your sport or normal routine.
